Sweekaar & Upkaar

Sweekaar is a non-profit, non-commercial voluntary organisation set up to reach the unreached section of the society especially the disabled and disadvantaged. Moved by the plight of the handicapped, the founder Dr. P Hanumantha Rao, a practising paediatrician, physiatrist and developmental disability specialist began the crusade in March 1977 for rehabilitation people with disabilities from womb to tomb.Initially the programme was meant for rehabilitation of the mentally handicapped with five children in a small garage with one teacher. Today, it has grown into a 175 room facility serving 1600 people per day through its 12 outlets, serving all types of handicapped manned by 265 staff members. All the services are supported by a team of dedicated experts like paediatricians, physiatrists, developmental disability specialists, psychiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, ENT surgeons, dental surgeons, clinical psychologists, child psychologists, medico psychiatric social workers, special educators, genetic counsellors, audiologists, speech pathologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and prosthetic and orthotic engineers.

HYDERABAD SPECIAL SCHOOL FOR MENTALLY HANDICAPPED
Today Sweekaar is training 261 children as day scholars of whom 27 are inmates in the hostel. The school is imparting education, training in functional academics, pre-vocational and vocational training in urban based industrial trades like embroidery, tailoring, toys and dolls making, candle making, envelope making, book binding, detergent manufacturing, chalk piece making, sweet box making, etc. The students are provided with regular therapies like
behaviour modification therapy, speech therapy and physiotherapy.

SPECIAL SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
The spirit behind this is a strong belief that the deaf are not dumb. They become dumb because of our negligence. If proper intervention is provided at the right time, they can become normal individuals like any of us. Today there are 240 children, of whom are 49 residents in the hostel, studying in classes from pre-primary to X class with Telugu, Hindi and English media. All the classes are fully equipped with modern equipment. Early intervention centre for the hearing impaired was started with the sole aim of early detection, early intervention, early rehabilitation and integration into the main stream of the society. They will not be dumb any more if speech therapy and hearing aid is given at the right time.

PRAKRUTI RURAL REHABILITATION CENTRE
This is spread over in 32-acre land with vegetation of 12,000 plants growing on the project area. The centre has been set up with the sole aim of rehabilitating the rural adult mentally handicapped and to give them agro-based industrial training in agriculture,
horticulture, poultry, dairy, bee-keeping,
pottery,carpentry, etc., and send them back to the rural area. They are also trained in functional academics like money concept, time concept, etc.

UPKAAR
DR. PASUPULETI NIRMALA HANUMANTHA RAO CHARITABLE TRUST
Upkaar is a non-profit, non-commercial voluntary organisation set up in 1987 to serve and provide medical care, aids and appliances to needy, destitutes, orphans, old aged, disadvantaged/underprivileged and backward section of
the society, awarding of merit scholarships, gold medals to recognise and support the hidden talents.

DR RAO'S CHARITABLE CLINIC
Prevention of diseases and disability by free medical care and total vaccination cover. Provides psychiatric counselling and health education.

CHARITABLE DENTAL CLINIC
Prevention, treatment of general dental ailments, prosthodontics, periodontics, minor oral surgical procedures, screening of children for dental ailments at schools, early detection for oral cancer and health education for oral hygiene.

ARTIFICIAL LIMB CENTRE
Qualified prosthetic and orthotic engineers manufacture the artificial limbs, walking aids, calipers, splints and supports, corrective shoes, collars, corsets, belts. These are supplied free of cost to the poor and for others on cost basis.

DRUG DE-ADDICTION CENTRE
This is an acute care and counselling centre, rendering psychotherapies, therapeutic self-help groups, in-patient, out-patient medical facility by expert specialists.

HOME FOR THE AGED
This is a residential facility providing environmental conditions to suit the requirement of senior citizens needs, which include medical care, recreation and meditation and counselling service finds the foremost service.

DAY CARE CENTRE FOR THE ELDERLY
This unit provides services for interaction, recreation, meditation, learning, counselling, pre-occupation in some trades, legal advice and guidance for pension matters and rehabilitation, etc.
